How much does it cost to own a dog or puppy?

Our expert advice

Advice by Lindsay Arliss, Dog behaviour and training specialist

The cost of buying a dog can range from a couple of hundred pounds, to a few thousand. It all depends on where you get your dog from.

If you’re adopting a dog from a rehoming centre, they will likely have all their vaccinations up-to-date and may have been neutered. If you buy a puppy from a breeder, you may need to pay for puppy vaccinations and neutering in addition to parasite prevention.

Don’t forget all the things you need to take care of your new dog. This can cost between £300 and £500 which can be up to £2000 a year. Considering the average dog can live to the age of 13, this is a big expense to factor into your life.

Taking out pet insurance can give you peace of mind knowing you’re covered for any unexpected medical costs. But you'll have to cover routine costs like dental care and parasite prevention yourself.

Other costs may include doggy day care, dog walkers, training classes and boarding kennels. Some people have even been known to change their car as the dog outgrew their current one!

You may be able to buy some things second hand, including harnesses, crates and leads. Puppies are bound to grow out of things quite quickly!

Many pet products are advertised for human eyes, not the pets. So, if you have a limited budget, it’s worth shopping around. You may be able to save money choosing the non-branded items.

Some vet practices offer a membership scheme which allows you to get vaccines, routine parasite control and some other services at a reduced cost.

More information

Pets are an amazing part of the family! But caring for them can be expensive. While you can’t avoid costs all together, here are some money-saving tips from our own staff and volunteers.

Three things you can do today

Look at your current finances

Work out what you can realistically afford and factor in the initial cost of buying a dog, monthly outgoings and everything you need to get before.

Work out the cost of pet services

Research local pet services including doggy day care, boarding kennels and training support. This will help with budgeting.

Try a bit of DIY

Dogs are easily amused with anything! Plastic bottles and cardboards boxes can make great feeding games. A little imagination goes a long way.
