Why is my dog barking and howling while left alone?

How-to guide

Advice by Lindsay Arliss, Dog behaviour and training specialist

1

Reduce the amount of time your dog is left home alone, which may involve asking a dog walker, pet sitter or family and friends to help.

Some dogs bark and howl when they’re left home alone because they find it distressing being separated from their favourite human, and they don’t feel safe.

Try not to get annoyed with your dog if they damage something in the home or do their business on the carpet while you’re out, as they can’t help this behaviour, it’s an emotional reaction caused by the worry and panic of being home alone.

2

If your dog becomes distressed or anxious as you leave to go out of the house, try the following routine without actually leaving your dog for any length of time. This can be repeated until your pet eventually stops vocally reacting to it.

1. Let your dog out to do their business in the garden.
2. Put your coat/shoes on.
3. Get your keys/bag ready.
4. Head towards the door.
5. Go out of the door.

3

Remote live-view cameras are non-expensive and are a great way to watch your dog at home while you are out. If you see they are becoming stressed, try to return home before any barking starts.

4

Don’t leave your dog home alone for any longer than they can cope with, as it will set your training back. As mentioned, use a doggy day care service, dog sitters or ask family and friends to help, so your pet’s not left alone for longer than they can cope with.

More information

Take your dog for a calm walk before you leave to go out, or work on a couple of training cues. Boredom busting enrichment feeders will also help your pet use their brain and keep them relaxed while you’re out.

Many dogs are extremely distressed when left at home alone. These dogs may benefit from calming treatments from the vets, alongside working with a behaviour professional.

What your dog might be feeling

I don’t like being left home alone without my favourite humans for company, I feel unsafe, and I start to worry and panic and I can’t help but shout out for you to come back!

Three things you can do today

Listen and learn

If your dog barks or howls at various times during the day, try to work out what might be causing this; is the washing machine on or are there workmen outside?

Neighbourly gestures

If your neighbours are bothered by your dog’s barking while you’re out, pop round and just reassure them you and your dog are working on it!
