My Labrador has been acting really off the last couple of days—he’s not eating much, sleeping a lot, and just seems sluggish. I’m worried he might have a fever, but I’m not sure how to check or what signs I should be looking for. What’s the best way to tell if a dog has a fever?
Like us humans, when a dog is fighting an infection they may also have a fever (a high temperature). This can make them feel quite unwell. It can be difficult to tell if your dog has a high temperature without visiting the vets. But there are a few signs to look out for.
Your dog may:
- Feel hot to the touch, especially the ears
- Have reddening on the gums
- Pant more than usual
But these signs can also show on a hot day, and after exercise or excitement. Dogs with a true temperature are usually low in energy (lethargic). They may also not want to eat or drinking anything.
If you think your dog has a high temperature, go to your vet who will take their temperature using a thermometer. This is usually taken from a dog’s bottom (although some practices have ear thermometers).
Things to be mindful of:
- Watch out for heat stroke (collapsing or difficulty standing, fast breathing, vomiting).
- Don’t exercise your dog in the middle of the day when it’s very hot.
- Don’t leave your dog in hot rooms or the car unsupervised.
- If you’re concerned your dog is unwell, seek veterinary help as an untreated fever can be life-threatening.
I was struggling with my dog's anxiety, especially when we had to leave the house. Thanks to Woodgreen's advice, I've made some changes that have worked wonders. By sticking to a consistent routine, my dog knows what to expect each day, which has significantly reduced her anxiety.
This advice really helped me and my new pup! I tried teaching recall without your guidance and struggled. Woodgreen's step-by-step dog training videos break each action down for you and I'm happy to say we finally made progress!
