I feel guilty for going on holiday and leaving my dog behind

I’m planning a holiday soon, but I’m feeling really guilty about leaving my 2-year-old Cockapoo behind. I know it's for the best because she doesn’t travel well, but I’m worried about how she’ll cope while I’m gone. How can I make sure she’s well cared for, and is it normal to feel this guilty about leaving her?

It’s completely normal to feel guilty when you leave your dog in the care of someone else to go on holiday. Emotions reveal an insight into personal values and the fact you’re feeling so nervous or guilty means you care about your dog’s wellbeing. There could be a number of reasons why you decide not to take your dog along with you on holiday. It might not be their best interests, for example if you’re going abroad and the accommodation doesn't allow pets, or they may not travel well, and you don’t want to cause them distress. Whatever the reason may be, you’re a good owner and there are lots of alternative options to explore.
